‘The Courtyard’. We had a wonderful opening party to celebrate the completion of a new garden worked on by local young people, volunteers, project workers, students and local residents. The design was drawn up by students from the Leeds Met University School of Architecture, Landscape and Design. They worked alongside our Consultation Worker to put residents design ideas into practice.

Youth Support Workers supported Leeds University students in the organisation and facilitation of a mosaic sign building workshop at Al Haqq Study Support Centre housed at the Multicultural Centre on Woodsley Road. Children and young people were involved in learning mosaic skills and making a sign for their youth group.

Kelsall Avenue street party. We enjoyed an afternoon of sun, fire juggling and vegetarian cuisine at the Kelsall Avenue street party. It was organised to celebrate the completion of three gardens on the street: ‘Permaculture Garden’, ‘Sun Trap’ and ‘Moon garden’. We cooked pizza in the cob oven we had built in the permaculture garden and made use of the barbeques built in the two other gardens. It was a great time to recognise the efforts of the young people and volunteers who were involved in creating them.

We ran a mosaic workshop at Unity Day 2007. It was a great success with lots of people of all different ages participating and learning a new skill. It was also an opportunity for young people who had learnt skills on Hyde Park Source training courses to pass on their skills to others. When complete, we installed the mosaic on the side of our building and held an opening celebration. The mosaic can be viewed from Woodsley Road, Belle Vue Road and Rosebank Road.

In October 2007 we started work on an urban wildlife garden for Rosebank Primary School. Children, staff, parents, young people, volunteers and project workers have been involved in building the garden and taking part in workshops. The garden has a rainbow bench with a pot of gold at the end, a magical willow tunnel and a beautiful water channel. There is also a herb bed and two beds for the children and staff at the school to plant their own vegetables and plants.

ACE wall! We supported Armley Community Environmentalists with some renovation work on Edinburgh Place in Armley. We lowered the front wall of a garden and used reclaimed bricks from the yard to rebuild the central wall.

Brudenell Primary School. We completed some renovation work for Brudenell Primary School in their playground area and hope to return in September to work with children and staff to build a colourful circular mosaic planter/bench in their school entrance area.

Innovation Award. We were pleased to accept the Community and City Pride Award for ‘Innovation of the Year’ for our permaculture garden. Built on permaculture principles. As part of the process young people, volunteers, local residents and project workers were involved in making and using cob, a clay, sand, straw combination mixed together using bare feet! It was lots of fun and a great team building activity.
In the area where we live none of the houses have gardens and the only shared outside space was the bin yard where the communal toilets used to be. Before H P Source converted the yard into a garden it was dark and dank and used to fill up with rubbish. Now it is open and light and full of beautiful plants to look at and some herbs we can eat too. We spend a lot of time in it with our children. Converting the yard involves all of the people who share it and also enhances the look of the street as a whole by making some green space and changes it from being a place to dump stuff to somewhere to take care of and make more beautiful. ” Philip Greene

In summer 2007 we worked in partnership with young people at Youth Point (an advice and support service for 13 -19s). We supported them in the design and creation of a garden area in their back yard. For this work we were runner up in the Community and City Pride category of Partnership Project of the year.
