Background   to   the   organisation
Hyde Park Source was established in 1998 by two local people who wanted to do something about the state of their local environment. Their idea was to work with local residents in increasing recreational spaces from the derelict and hazardous bin yards which occur every 4th house in the back-to-back terraced streets. From these beginnings, Hyde Park Source has grown into a successful and influential organisation providing supported, accredited training to young people who are, or are at risk of being, not in education, employment or training.
In 2002 we moved into our current premises, which are situated near the gardens that we are involved in renovating. We renovated the derelict council property, creating office spaces, social area, art room, joinery workshop, clean-up area and disabled access. We now employ 2 Youth Workers, a Site Supervisor, and an Admin/Finance Worker.
We have evolved from a mainly environmental project into a significant and successful training organisation, with a particular focus on disadvantaged young people and long term unemployed people. The diversity of volunteers, residents, community groups, referral agencies, partnerships and young people that are involved is huge, and contributes to the organisation’s success.
From 2 residents working from a living room, the organisation has developed into a significant force for positive change in the Burley and Hyde Park Areas of Leeds.
